Lean Change Element

Friction

When we don't see change happening, we might be creating, or have too much friction that gets the change stuck.

Friction

Friction vs traditional thinking

Two different assumptions about how change should work.

Lean Change

Friction is natural. It's impossible to not create ripples throughout the organization as people react to the change.

Traditional Change Management

This is simply resistance. It needs to be overcome with good planning, communications, and execution.

What we sometimes label as resistance might simply be a manifestation of friction. A common pattern would be when we're working on an agile transformation but the teams don't seem to be complying with the new agile frameworks.

While we typical make a leap to thinking they are resisting, it's more likely there is friction somewhere else in the organization that is being created. For example, it's common for organizations to add new processes, but not takeaway old processes. A team perceived as being 'resistant to change' might simply not have the brain processing cycles to do all the new things they're being asked to do, and also keep up with the old things the organization expects.
